OUR BACKGROUND

The Center for International Health (CIH) was established in 1985 as a public-private venture with a
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Institutional Development Grant
Award and funding from Milwaukee County government.  It serves as the lead agency of an area-
wide consortium that comprises Children's Hospital and Health System, Froedtert Memorial
Hospital, the Medical College of Wisconsin, the BloodCenter of Wisconsin, the University of
Wisconsin - Milwaukee, Marquette University, GE Healthcare and Milwaukee County Government.

In carrying out its mission, CIH draws from the array of resources – faculty, clinicians, health
professionals, and programs – available from the consortium, deploying these to meet the
requirements of its international health activities.

CIH has engaged in over 50 international health partnerships and projects since it became operational
in 1986, training several thousand health professionals/workers in clinical and management fields.
Implementation strategies are based on multi-year or short-term human resources for health capacity
building through tailored training programs, consultation, technical assistance and technology transfer
for the development of service systems and practice models.  Partnerships are structured so that the
appropriate host country governmental and non-governmental health institutions and programs are
full participants both to facilitate implementation and promote sustainability.

Depending on the nature and scope of CIH partnerships and projects, activities may be conducted in
host countries and/or Milwaukee, with the venues of its consortium teaching hospitals and their
community-based primary care outreach programs, and the universities health professions’ schools
serving as practicum field sites.

CIH is governed by a Board of Directors made up of the CEOs of its consortium member
institutions.  A core executive and technical staff assume overall responsibility for initiating and
coordinating the planning, implementation and management of its projects and activities as well as
their monitoring and evaluation. Children’s Hospital and Health System provides general
administrative and support services, including financial and budget management, auditing, human
resources, procurement and information technology.
