| REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL FOOD RELIEF PROGRAMS ARMENIA & KENYA November, 2007 Armenia - In support of supplemental feeding objectives, the dehydrated food product was supplied to, distributed among, and served to beneficiaries at 17 health care and social welfare institutions, serving 4,000 beneficiaries at hospitals (primary and psychiatric), children’s homes, nursing homes and veterans homes in Yerevan, Sevan, Vanadzor, Gumri, Kapan, Armash, Abovyan, Gavar and Vardenis. As a key to moving forward with the importation and distribution of food, CIH established a new working relationship with local NGO, Armenian Technology Group Foundation (ATGF), to facilitate communication with local government authorities as well as the rapid customs clearance and distribution of all commodities to targeted facilities. ATGF is a recipient of USDA and Department of State funding, most recently through the FY06 USDA Food for Progress program which included the import of donated food to Armenia. With such experience, ATGF is very familiar with local regulations and helped CIH in avoiding pitfalls commonly associated with the importation of food to Armenia. ATGF also assisted in surveying distribution sites for appropriate storage facilities to help eliminate the need for private/paid storage. Prior to commodity delivery, CIH and ATGF established three central storage locations: the Psychiatric Medical Center in Nubarashen, the Republican Anti-Tuberculosis Dispensary in Abovyan, the Sevan Psychiatric Center, and the Veterans Asylum on the outskirts of Yerevan. Collaboration with authorities at the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ministry of Labor and Social Questions (MoLSQ) enabled CIH to target health care facilities and social welfare institutions with the greatest need for immediate assistance. Written endorsements for the CIH initiative from these ministries also helped streamline approvals at other levels of government, including customs and sanitary inspection. Kenya - In support of supplemental feeding objectives, the dehydrated food product was supplied to, distributed among, and served to beneficiaries including 104 children in the Nyumbani Children’s Home, 208 children and 28 grandparents in Nyumbani Village, and 268 households among the Nyumbani Community Outreach (Lea-Toto) sites. Food product delivered to the Children’s Home will benefit the residing HIV+ orphans and vulnerable children, strengthening their immune systems, preventing HIV-related weight loss, wasting and malnutrition and supporting the absorption of anti-retroviral medications. As food and medication is provided, children are able to attend school either at the Nyumbani school house or other area schools. Food product delivered to the Nyumbani Village will benefit orphans and elders left behind by the “lost generation of the AIDS pandemic,” as they build self-sustaining communities through agriculture, poultry, dairy products, handicrafts and external services. It allows funding to go towards the provision of vocational opportunities in the form of training, tools and start-up financing for trades, cottage industry and agriculture endeavors with the goal of self-sustaining independence, financial security and stability for residents, particularly maturing young people. Food product delivered to the Lea-Toto sites will benefit more than 2,000 HIV+ children and their families in the Kangemi, Kawangware, Kibera, Kariobangi, Dandora, Mukuru, Waithaka, Riruta, Mutuini and Ruthimitu slums. It supports home based care (HBC) and satellite clinics whose goal is to provide basic medical and nursing services, counseling and psychological support, HIV transmission prevention education, voluntary counseling and testing (VCT), training of caregivers, business development and income generation training and activities. |
