Shanghai Physicians Studying Emergency Medicine in Milwaukee
Brock Bierman, representing the United States Agency for International
Development, presents Dr. John R. Petersen with the President's Lifetime Service
Award as part of a ceremony honoring 34 Milwaukee area doctors, dentists,
nurses, pharmacists and nutritional specialists for their work with CIH.

All the awards were issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic
Participation on behalf of the President of the United States to recognize the best
in American spirit and to encourage all Americans to work towards improving
communities around the world through volunteer service and civic participation.

These represent multi-year projects addressing health systems development and encompass
institutional capacity building, health professions training and commodities procurement.  

Poland  
Pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Development
EMS demonstration project restructuring existing Soviet model ambulance service to provide
improved care for major trauma and critical medical conditions.

Republic of Georgia
Two separate awards for Primary Health Care/Healthy Communities Development Projects
in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Shida Kartli-Gori Regions
Training of family physicians, family health nurses and public health/general dentists;
restructuring of existing Soviet model polyclinic multi-specialty system of primary care;
development of community hypertension services; and the establishment of demonstration
family medicine clinics and regional family medicine and primary care nursing training centers.

Republic of Armenia
Rural Primary Care Physicians and Nurses Training
Retraining of primary care physicians and nurses from rural health centers, Lori Marz in
family medicine and primary care nursing; training of trainers; establishment of primary care
training center.

District Level Primary Health Care Intersectoral Planning and Action
Fostering coordination and community participation to improve primary health care (PHC)
by involving such sectors as agriculture, animal husbandry, food, water supply, education
and adult literacy, public works and industry.

Zimbabwe     
Health Sciences Information and Library Management
Training medical librarians in the management dissemination of health sciences information
with the aim of improving district hospital medical libraries.

Guatemala
HIV Education and Prevention
Training of health promoters and community health workers in basic HIV/AIDS knowledge
and providing skills and techniques for dissemination this information in their communities.
