| SHANGHAI PHYSICIANS STUDYING EMERGENCY MEDICINE IN MILWAUKEE IN PREPARATION FOR THE 2010 SHANGHAI WORLD EXPOSITION August, 2004 Chen Erzhen, MD, and Pan Shuming, MD, from Shanghai, China, are professors at Shanghai Second Medical University who will study the medical specialty of emergency medicine in Milwaukee this summer as part of a collaborative program established by the Center for International Health. Shanghai, with a population of more than 18 million, will host the 2010 World Exposition. Chinese officials want to make sure an effective, modern emergency medicine system is in place for citizens and visitors attending the exposition. Drs. Chen and Pan are studying with Medical College of Wisconsin faculty physicians who work with the Milwaukee County Emergency Medical System located at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital and with physicians at the Level 1 Trauma Centers at Froedtert and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, nationally recognized leaders in emergency services and trauma care. The focus of their studies is to enhance their skills as emergency medicine physicians and to understand emergency medical systems’ design. They are the first physicians to be trained as part of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Center for International Health and Shanghai Second Medical University. This is their first visit to the United States and their first travel outside China. The Emergency Medicine System (EMS) training curriculum developed by Medical College of Wisconsin faculty for the Center for International Health incorporates standards of the US Department of Transportation national highway traffic administration’s EMS division’s technical assistance program and accreditation standards of the International Joint Commission on hospital standards. It has been used successfully in center partnerships in other parts of the world, most recently in Poland. The Center for International Health, a consortium of public and private higher education and professional training institutions has conducted health education and training projects of health professionals in more than 30 countries since its inception in 1986. Members include Children’s Hospital and Health System, Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, Marquette University, the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee County government and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. |
