| REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL FOOD RELIEF PROGRAMS SOUTH AFRICA & TANZANIA April, 2008 South Africa - Thanks to the generosity of Daniel E. Meehan and SABMiller, CIH was able to supply one million donated meals of Breedlove dehydrated food product to approximately 15,000 beneficiary families including elderly members, pregnant and nursing mothers, orphans and vulnerable children, people living with HIV/AIDS and patients with serious debilitating disease (e.g. tuberculosis, cancer) through the Philani Nutrition and Development Centers. Philani is an organization based in the townships of Cape Town whose mission is to promote pediatric health and nutrition, prevent child malnutrition, rehabilitate underweight children, provide sources of income to mothers and support medically and socially need families and those infected or affected by disease through a comprehensive program of education, care and treatment. The dehydrated food product will be distributed through Philani's six child health and nutrition rehabilitation centers in Crossroads, Brown's Farm, Site C, Site B, Town 2 and Mayibuya (Khayelitsha), nine home-based child health and nutrition programs, seven pre-schools and seven training centers. Tanzania - With a $100,000 grant from USAID, CIH will be able to provide four million meals of Breedlove dehydrated food product to beneficiaries at the Buguruni Anglican Health Centre of Dar es Salaam, which is part of the overall health, education and economic development program of the Anglican Diocese of Dar es Salaam. The program is also part of a new non-profit organization, the MEA Foundation, which combines the health programs, St. Augustine Primary School, Archbishop John Sepeku Secondary School and microeconomic initiatives into a coordinated, comprehensive development effort. |
