- Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Development
Scope: EMS training and demonstration project in 3 cities restructuring existing Soviet model
ambulance service to provide improved care for major trauma and critical medical conditions
Results: More than 1,200 physicians, nurses and first responders trained and certified in accordance
with U.S. life-support standards; the establishment of the first academic department of emergency
medicine at the Jagiellonian University Medical Academy; the convening of the first Polish
American EMS Congress; procurement of modern pre-hospital life-support and trauma care
ambulance equipment

REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA - Primary Health Care/Healthy Communities Development
Scope: Training of family physicians, family health nurses and dentists in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti,
Shida Kartli-Gori Regions; restructuring of existing Soviet model polyclinic multi-specialty system
of primary care; development of community hypertension services; establishment of demonstration
family medicine clinics and regional family medicine and primary care nursing training centers
Results: Establishment of the first rural family medicine clinic and regional family medicine training
center in Georgia; the development of core groups of family medicine and nurse trainers; the
retraining and licensing of 98 primary care physicians in family medicine, 120 nurses in primary
care nursing, 12 dentists in preventive and general dentistry and 100 physician and nurse teams in
the management of hypertension; construction of the first purpose dedicated rural family medicine
clinic and regional demonstration and training center; procurement of medical equipment and
antihypertensive medications

Scope: Retraining of primary care physicians and nurses from rural health centers in family
medicine and primary care nursing; training of trainers; establishment of a rural primary care training
center
Results: Establishment of the first primary care training center in Lori Marz; development of core
groups of family medicine and primary care nursing trainers; retraining of 18 primary care
physicians and 6 primary care nurses; procurement of medical equipment

- District Level Primary Health Care Intersectoral Planning and Action
Scope: Fostering coordination and community participation to improve primary health
care (PHC) by involving such sectors as agriculture, animal husbandry, food, water
supply, education and adult literacy, public works and industry
Results: 42 participants from the above sectors were trained as facilitators to promote
the development of and provide training in PHC Intersectoral coordination

ZIMBABWE - Health Sciences Information and Library Management

Results: Training of 21 medical librarians, including 19 from Zimbabwe and 2 from
Malawi

GUATEMALA – HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention
Scope: Training of health promoters and community health workers in HIV/AIDS,
including techniques for dissemination of this information in their communities
Results: 31 health promoters and 76 community health workers trained and provided
with instructor manuals

KENYA – Pediatric HIV/AIDS
Scope: Training and train-the-trainer workshop for health professionals and allied
